Bastione Castle While passing through Sicily on his return from Palestine, scholars and researchers affirms that Charles the Great called the Bastione Castle the “Torre del Trappeto di Malvicino” (Tower of oil mill in Malvicino). In 1811 the family name to which it has been associated belonged to that of the Count Bernardo Ioppolo family and then in 1815 to Lady Caterina Branciforte, Princess of Butera. Around the middle part of the last century, it was later bought by a rich English landowner, Maria Eugenia Johnson, Saverio D'Amico's wife. The municipality of Capo d'Orlando bought it from their heirs. Regarding its date of construction, experts declare that it can be fixed around the thirteenth and fourteen century, the period that actually corresponded to the intense cultivation of the "cannamele" (sugar canes) in "Piana Orlandina", as in a great part of Sicily. It's main function was that of defending the plantations from pirates incursions. Today, Bastione Castle is completely restored and thanks to the "Cooperativa il Quadrifoglio" (the Cloverleaf Cooperative Society), which handles the protection and the promotion of the property, it can be visited integrally inside and out. Admission to the castle is free and offers visitors the possibility to learn about the history of this centenarian castle, with the help of specialised guides. |
