They stand on the promontory, and the immediate sensation is that the castle must have had a defense funtion and to sight privateering fleets. According to the legend, it was named by Charles the Great, passing through Sicily on his return from Palistine. The date of it’s construction is uncertain but it can’t be excluded that it could have replaced one already existing from the times of ancient Agatirno.

Sorgono sul promontorio, ed è immediata la sensazione che il castello doveva avere una funzione di difesa e di avvistamento delle flotte corsare. Secondo la legenda fu così denominato da Carlo Magno, di passaggio in Sicilia, rientrante dalla Palestina. Incerta la data della sua costruzione ma non si esclude che ne abbia rimpiazzata una già esistente ai tempi della vecchia Agatirno.
