The Thico IV will set sail from Capo dOrlando on the morning of the September 13, 2003, to begin the circumnavigation of the globe, going west. The first stopping place will be Palermo where the sponsor Sicilian Region has pretended a second official departure, like if Capo dOrlando was not in Sicily. Umberto De Luca and Alfredo Fiocco are the two skippers that they will attempt in this enterprise with one 14 meter (46 ft) sailing boat. The travel program was illustrated in the splendid port of Capo dOrlando, during a press conference in which Engineer Fortunato Lo Presti as president of the Motor nautical and Sailing Association of Capo dOrlando, Deputy Mayor Salvatore Mantineo and the Mayor Dr. Massimo Carrello all took part. Alfredo Fiocco with a geographic map of the globe has illustrated the following navigation program: September 13, 2003 departure from the port of Capo dOrlando. September 14, 2003 second departure from Palermo going west in order to reach the Spanish Balearic archipelago, then to exceed Straight of Gibraltar and onto enter the Atlantic ocean. October 2003 they will arrive in the Canary Islands, with a pause of approximately one month, attending the Trade winds that concur for a faster passage across the Atlantic, the first days of November 2003 will expect to leave for the Antilles Islands. The visit to the Antilles islands will be of approximately 45 days. In first days of January 2004 will be expected to anchor in Venezuela, where they should meet the Italian community. Then the Panama Canal will be crossed in order to enter Pacific ocean, where the first stop will be in Polynesia. In the Pacific the places to visit other than Polynesian are Tahiti and New Caledonia. Then to dock in the Australian continent in late summer 2004. Naturally our sister city Fremantle, with its great community of Orlandinians, will be waiting and it is already preparing for a warm acceptance of the two sailors Fiocco and De Luca, whose arrival is programmed for the second half of October 2004.In this area the two sailors that left Capo dOrlando, will stay until Christmas 2004 in then will cross into Indian ocean to reach Saint Denis, Madagascar and the Seychelles islands. Therefore, sailing along the coast of the Horn of Africa in late winter 2005, then into the Red Sea and reaching the Mediterranean anchoring in Greece and Turkey, then to re-enter in Sicily. At the end of August 2005 they will re-enter Capo dOrlando, where it is hoped to be able to receive Fiocco and De Luca in the new port or at least with the jobs of completion and widening already begun. The sponsors are the Sicilian Region, the Community of Capo dOrlando and the societies Irritec & Siplast irrigation systems. © copyright 2003 Paolo Cacciola for www.agatirno.it and www.laltrasicilia.com |
